Fashion Merchandising in New York

This program includes pre-program orientation meetings on the Texas State University campus in the fall 2021 semester. This program will meet for class on the Texas State University campus during the 2022 spring semester, and will also include a six-day field trip to study fashion merchandising and attend the National Retail Federation Annual Conference and Expo in New York City in January 2022.

What Students Will Learn

2017 program students on a site visitThis program incorporates real-world situations, allowing students to actually experience and practice concepts that are relevant to their Fashion Merchandising degree. Through their visit to New York, students will get an in-depth look at the fashion industry, learn from industry professionals, and witness how this multifaceted industry offers exciting opportunities within merchandising, design, wholesale, styling, trend and retail analytics. In addition, students will participate in the NRF Student program where they will be provided with the skills and resources for a life-changing career in retail.

Assignments and seminars will focus on the key forces driving change in the retail industry with focus on the trends that will matter most. Students will also have the opportunity to build upon future partnerships and mentoring relationships, as well as explore internship opportunities for the future.

Tentative program, subject to change, includes:

  • 7 day/6 night visit in a Deluxe Hotel with shuttle service to/from airport
  • 2 days of visits with Key Industry Leaders in the Fashion Industry
  • NYC Educational Shopping Tour
  • 1 Group Dinner
  • Ticket to Popular Show
  • Ticket to Current Fashion Exhibit at NYC Museum
  • Ticket to Retail's Big Show at Jacob K. Javits Convention Center (students purchase separately; not covered in Study in America program fee)

Admission is selective, and space is limited.

National Retail Federation Annual Conference and Expo

The National Retail Federation (NRF) is the world's largest retail trade association including department store, specialty, discount, catalog, internet, and independent retailers as well as chain restaurants and grocery stores.

The NRF Annual Conference and Expo, Retail's Big Show, unites the retail industry through unique opportunities only available at this show: opportunities to network with nearly 30,000 attendants including retailers, vendors, and industry experts; a lineup of speakers encompassing a variety of industry visionaries; unique sessions over insightful and applicable topics; access to the NRF Innovation Lab to showcase the latest technology in retail. Important:  To ensure your place in this program, you must complete the program application and then receive approval from Ms. Romo.

Tuition and Program Fee

3 Hours (1 Course) Undergraduate $922.08


The additional program fee includes lodging, travel within New York City, one group dinner, Broadway show ticket, fashion industry site visits, educational shopping trip, and additional on-site programming: $1,700

Important Note: Airfare and personal expenses, including most meals and purchases on the shopping trip, are not included in the program fee.

The course tuition and program fee is billed and paid through SBS Billing and Payment.


All university policies regarding installments, course drops, and refunds apply to all billed and paid tuition and program fees.

Important COVID-19 Information

All participants in Texas State Study in America programs adhere to the health guidelines in the Texas State University Roadmap, including the Health and Safety Measures and Student Roadmap page. The guidelines provided for protecting health and safety on campus also apply to field locations and travel in this Study in America program.

The field/travel portion of the program is subject to change and/or cancellation. If the field portion of the program is canceled, course instruction will continue virtually, but Texas State Study in America will refund the additional program fee (not course tuition).


All participants are required to comply with New York City's vaccination requirements by showing proof of receiving at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine authorized for use by the FDA or WHO when entering required program locations. This proof can be a physical, photocopy, or photo of the CDC Vaccination Card, official immunization record from your health care provider, or NYC COVID Safe App where you upload a photo of your CDC Vaccination Card. To ensure students' ability to participate in this program on location in New York City, Texas State Study in America will need to verify vaccination requirements of New York City are in place before departure.

Applying to the Program

  1. Complete and submit the program application
  2. Complete and submit the Approval Request to Travel during an Ongoing Pandemic form immediately after submitting the program application
  3. Receive approval from Ms. Romo and the Office of Distance and Extended Learning
  4. Register for your program's courses

Registering for Courses

Once approved and after submitting the required information, register for your course through the Student Information System/CatsWeb during the regular university registration period.
